Do you know who I am, Now?…

When I was the head coach at Bethel, we lost one of our only two games against Covington, and I remember feeling like we got a raw deal. I asked the referee, "Do you know who I am?" He gave me a technical foul on the spot. It was a tough break for a 22-year-old college kid. I was so entitled that I actually believed we deserved to win just because we worked harder than anyone else. That was false and wrong. I've learned that working hard and embracing the process as the journey is the most important way I've evolved. Coaching for an outcome is a zero-sum game. Doing a "job" is a zero-sum game. I coach and train because I genuinely love empty gyms and building people up, maximizing their potential. The passion hasn't changed, and the temper is still there, but I channel it all into my programming and my newsletter. I am entitled to nothing. I take responsibility for everything. So, if your kid is struggling with feeling like he "deserves" something, remember: you deserve nothing; you earn everything. Let's... work cps-training.com

Feature Story

Who we are > What we do

The biggest thing I want your child to gain from joining my program is to become a great human being. How do you define that? I define it as being unapologetically God-fearing, hard-working, tenacious, and just. The world is soft. It enables and promotes mediocrity. Look at most high school sports programs; they are a mountain of average. Instagram clickbait has tricked kids and families into thinking that just showing up is enough and wondering why they don’t play on Friday nights. Well, it’s one person’s opinion, but I still think having high standards works. I still believe that saying "yes sir," "no sir," and showing respect works. I still believe that our kids need guidance and should strive to serve their communities, not dream of being a TikToker, "rizz," "6-7," or any other garbage that is pushed onto them. Be honest, look people in the eye, and work your butt off. THAT is what I want every kid to take away, because most won’t be playing in 10 years, but they will be husbands, fathers, and leaders. I’m not on a soapbox; I am a sinner in need of grace daily. But do not be deceived about what the truth is. I may be a throwback, but this is the way. Who you are as a young man or woman is so much more important than what you do, and don’t ever forget it.

A tribute to my Papa on his Birthday

My grandpa would have been 75 this past Sunday. He died when I was 21. I thought I was tough and had it all figured out. Every day, every time I go to build something I think of him. He is my North Star. I would have a list of drawers to be able to get the basketball out. When the work was done he would rebound for me on the court and hoop he built for my mom. Him and I both had tempers and I remember always storming away angry, I didn’t understand where he was coming from. I do now.
